What is a Jigger?

A jigger or measure is a bartending tool used to measure spirits, which is typically then poured into a glass or cocktail shaker.

The term jigger in the sense of a small cup or measure of spirits or wine originates in the U.S. in the early 19th century. It was slang for a small drink of about half a gill or so, or the special cup used for it.

This style of double-ended jigger is made of stainless steel with two unequal sized opposing cones in an hourglass shape.

How to use a Jigger...

Many professional bartenders have built up strong proficiency with using jigger's in settings where speed is of an essence. The way to use a jigger most efficiently is to hold it between thumb and forefinger, or between your first and second fingers.

Hold the jigger steady, and fill it with your liquid of choice; and then it's easy to quickly tip the contents into a shaker or mixing glass.

A must have for all bar tenders and home users.

Why free pour when you can use a jigger?

Some bartenders think that free pouring looks very cool, it seems fast but at the same time if you learn how to work fast with the jigger, it can be equally as fast.

The main benefit of using a jigger is consistency – when free pouring some bartenders use some sort of counting, but some don’t count at all and just look at how much they are pouring into the shaker. But if the bartender is jiggering or using a measuring cup, the same quantities will be used and the drink will taste exactly the same each time.

You can easily over-pour or under-pour; of course, there are professionals who can pour 10 perfect measures, but there’s a chance that if you get disturbed and someone talks to you, you stop focusing and you begin over-pouring or under-pouring.

Free pouring is a skill. It certainly shows you how to work fast. It’s great showmanship, but what’s most important is the ethics behind customer service – drinks should be perfect. Using a jigger can help you to work efficiently; it shouldn’t be seen as something that slows you down.
